Fix it

In order of how often each one actually happens. Odds are good your answer is in the first three. Everything here can be done where you stand except where marked — those need a laptop and a connection, so do them before you leave.

Wrong firmware — it can't join at all

Needs a laptop and a connection

Check this first. A radio running stock Meshtastic or last year's build cannot connect to the 2026 mesh however correctly everything else is set. A brand-new radio counts.

Fix: flash the 2.8.x firmware from burn.meshtastic.org and factory reset. Needs a laptop and internet, so do it before you go.

If the flasher never sees your radio, try a different cable. Charge-only USB cables look identical to data ones and are a top-five cause of this.

Looks fine, nobody hears you

Preset
Short Turbo
Frequency slot
33

Any one of these wrong and you're silently off the mesh — the radio pairs, displays, accepts messages, and transmits nothing.

It's Short Turbo, not LongFast. LongFast is the Meshtastic default and the obvious wrong guess. If someone helpfully changed your preset, this is why you vanished.

On the mesh, but can't see anyone from camp

Check your channel list: Everyone should be channel 0 and Fauxliage channel 1.

Missing Fauxliage? Re-scan the camp QR. Missing Everyone? Someone used a Replace invitation instead of Add, which wipes channel 0 and breaks direct messages. That needs a reflash — find Blake.

Bluetooth won't connect

Pair from inside the Meshtastic app, never from your phone's Bluetooth settings. PIN is 123456.

Worked before and stopped, especially after a reflash? Reflashing changes the radio's Bluetooth identity and your phone is holding the old one. Go to Bluetooth settings, Forget This Device, then pair again from inside the app.

Also: a radio talks to one phone at a time, and Android needs the location permission or the scan list stays empty.

QR opens a webpage instead of the app

Your phone never learned to recognise Meshtastic links, which happens when the app was installed without a solid connection.

With internet: delete the app, reinstall it, try again. Without: enter the channel by hand using the name and key printed on your pocket card.

Entering it by hand, set the role to Secondary. Primary is reserved for Everyone on channel 0 — overwrite that and direct messages stop working.

Terrible range

Height beats everything. On the ground, in a backpack, in a pocket against your body, or inside anything metal — all destroy range. Clip it high or hang it up at camp.

Check the antenna is screwed down. Never power it on without one — that can permanently damage the transmitter.

Messages arrive late, or seem not to

Usually not a fault. This is a low-power radio doing multiple hops: minutes, not seconds. Messages sent while your phone is disconnected queue on the radio and go out later — they aren't lost.

Still stuck

Find Blake, and bring the radio and your phone — most problems live in the pairing between them and neither one alone can be diagnosed.

He has a laptop, spare cables, a spare radio and firmware on a USB stick, so most things are fixable at camp. Support is about an hour a day, not on demand — which is the real reason to sort your radio out at the flash party rather than out here.
